Moisander Lab
Marine Microbial Ecology
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

We study microbial diversity, community composition, and metabolisms in various marine habitats, including seawater, host associations, and biofilms on inert surfaces. We are particularly keen on nitrogen cycle related processes, including nitrogen fixation.

We combine studies in the field and in the laboratory, with methodology including PCR + amplicon sequencing targeting ribosomal and protein coding genes, quantitative PCR, metagenomics and genomics, culturing, Fluorescence and Scanning Electron Microscopy, flow cytometry, and biogeochemical / enzyme activity rate measurements. We have just acquired a FTIR microscopy system to supplement our instrumentation.
