Microbial Ecology

Moisander laboratory

at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

The laboratory of Pia Moisander at the UMass Dartmouth investigates the ecology of microbial communities in marine and freshwater environments.  We are focusing on the ecology of microbial communities that play important roles in the nitrogen cycle, such as nitrogen-fixing micro-organisms, many of which are bloom-forming, toxin-producing cyanobacteria.  We use functional genes in investigations of diversity and activity of these microbes that carry out important elemental transformations in biogeochemical cycles and are of interest from the ecosystem health perspective.  Our approaches include both laboratory and field experimentation, isolation and cultivation, molecular and genomic investigations, and measurements of physiological rates and environmental variables.

M.S. and Ph.D. projects available- please contact the PI for details.
